Change of Address Checklist: Who to Tell When You Move House
Moving your furniture is the obvious part. Moving your address through every organisation that still has the old one can take considerably longer. This checklist gives you one place to keep track of it.
Changing address sounds like one job. In reality, it can mean updating dozens of separate organisations — and several of them won't know you've moved just because another one does.
Updating your driving licence, for example, does not automatically update the address on your vehicle log book. Moving your bank account doesn't update your insurer. Redirecting your post doesn't replace telling organisations your new address.
The easiest approach is to work through the list by category rather than trying to remember everyone at once. Tick off what applies to your household and ignore what doesn't.
Your ticks are saved in this browser where local storage is available.
The most important address changes to check first
If you don't want to tackle the full list in one sitting, start here. These are the organisations most households are likely to need to consider.
Redirection is a safety net, not your change-of-address service
Redirecting your post is useful because it catches letters from organisations you've forgotten. It does not update those organisations for you. When redirected post arrives, treat it as a reminder to contact the sender and change the address they hold.
Council, government and official records
Deal with official records carefully because different departments often maintain separate systems.
Moving within Liverpool, into Liverpool or leaving the city?
Liverpool City Council has separate online processes depending on your circumstances.
- If you're already responsible for Council Tax and are moving home or leaving Liverpool, update your Council Tax address.
- If you're new to Liverpool and need to become responsible for Council Tax, register for Council Tax at the new address.
- If you receive Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support, there is a separate change-of-address process that may apply.
- Changing address also means updating your electoral registration.

Driving, vehicles and transport
This is one of the easiest areas to get wrong because several vehicle records are separate from one another.
Your driving licence and V5C are not the same address update
GOV.UK specifically requires drivers to update the address on their licence and registered keepers to update the V5C separately. Don't tick one off and assume the other has changed automatically.
Money, employment and insurance
Your home and household services
Health, family and education
Not every move means changing provider. Sometimes you only need to update the contact address already held on the account.
Shopping, subscriptions and everyday accounts
These aren't usually the first priority, but they're responsible for many parcels turning up at old addresses months after a move.
Which changes can you make before moving, and which should wait?
You don't need to change every record on the same day. Some organisations let you schedule a future address; others need you to wait until you've actually moved.
Useful to arrange before the move
- Royal Mail Redirection
- Broadband transfer or installation
- Home insurance for the new property
- TV Licence address change where applicable
- School or childcare contact details where appropriate
- Utility move arrangements
Often dealt with once you've moved
- HMRC personal address
- Driving licence
- V5C
- Electoral registration at the new address
- Some bank and financial accounts
- Everyday shopping accounts and subscriptions
Be careful about changing financial addresses too early
Some companies may send letters, cards, verification codes or other sensitive correspondence shortly after an address is changed. Make sure you actually have secure access to the new property before changing important financial records.
Useful official address-change links
These links were checked when this guide was reviewed. They go directly to the relevant official organisation rather than a third-party change-of-address service.
Things people commonly forget after moving
Keep a record of what you've changed
For important accounts, save the confirmation email or take a screenshot once the new address has been accepted.
If something later goes wrong — a bill arrives at the old property or an account still shows the previous postcode — you then have a record of when you submitted the change.
Also keep an eye on redirected post. Every letter arriving with your old address on it is a useful clue that another organisation still needs updating.
You don't need to finish this on moving night
Once you've spent a day moving furniture and opening boxes, updating sixteen online accounts is unlikely to be high on your list of priorities.
Deal with anything urgent first. Then work through the remaining categories over the following days. A checklist is useful precisely because it means you don't have to keep the whole job in your head.
For customers moving in Liverpool, this administrative side of the move sits alongside the practical work of getting belongings from one property to another. If you're still planning that part, our residential house removals page explains the service, while our removal FAQs answer common questions about moving day.
