The Complete Moving House Checklist
A practical, start-to-finish checklist for moving home without trying to remember everything at once. Use it whether you're moving across Liverpool, elsewhere in Merseyside or further across the UK.
Moving house is one of those jobs that feels manageable until all the small tasks start arriving at the same time. Packing is only part of it. There are keys, utilities, parking, furniture, addresses, meter readings, broadband, paperwork, children, pets and a dozen other things that suddenly matter because you're changing where you live.
This checklist is designed to give you somewhere to put all of that. You don't need to follow every item exactly eight weeks, four weeks or seven days before your move. Real house moves rarely run that neatly. Instead, use the timings as a sensible order for getting things done.
We've also included a few points particularly relevant when moving in Liverpool, including parking, city-centre apartments, terraced streets and updating your address after the move.
Short on time? Start with these eight things
6–8 weeks before moving
Get the decisions made before the boxes take over the house. If you have several weeks, use this stage to understand the size and practical shape of your move rather than packing everything immediately.
Don't judge the size of your move by bedroom count alone
Two three-bedroom houses can contain completely different amounts of furniture. The contents, access, parking and larger items usually tell us far more than the bedroom count alone.

3–4 weeks before moving
Turn the rough plan into actual arrangements.Moving in Liverpool? Check access before the day
Parking can make a surprisingly large difference to a removal. Liverpool city-centre apartments, terraced streets and permit-controlled roads can all have very different access arrangements.
- Check any parking or loading restrictions at both properties.
- Find out whether an apartment building has a designated loading area.
- Ask whether lifts need booking for removals.
- Tell us if there will be a long carry between the property and vehicle.
- Send photographs if an entrance or access route is difficult to describe.
The final week
Your goal now is to make moving morning boring.Who is responsible for what?
| Task | Usually | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Packing boxes | Customer unless packing has been booked | Have boxes sealed and ready, or arrange packing help beforehand. |
| Parking information | Customer provides details | Tell us about permits, long carries, stairs and lifts. |
| Dismantling furniture | Depends on the quotation | Agree this before moving day. |
| Specialist disconnections | Qualified specialist where required | Do not assume every appliance or installation can be disconnected by movers. |
| Documents and medication | Customer | Keep them personally rather than loading them. |
The day before
Finish small jobs now so they don't become moving-day jobs.Six surprisingly easy moving-day mistakes
Moving day: leaving the old home
Keep the important things with you and let the physical move begin. If you're waiting for keys, keep everyone updated
Moving-day timings do not always run exactly to plan. If you know there may be a delay, communicate it early rather than waiting until everyone is outside the new property.
You can see examples of how different moving situations have been handled in our case studies and client stories.
Arriving at the new home
A few decisions now can save a lot of furniture-moving later.Your first-night box

Need help with packing?
Packing an entire home is a separate job in its own right. Professional packing help can be included where required.

One final check before you close the old front door
Walk through the property slowly, one room at a time. Open cupboards. Check behind doors. Look in the loft, garage and shed. Check outdoor storage and make sure nothing important has been left behind.
Then check that the things you're carrying personally — keys, phone, identification, paperwork and medication — are actually with you.
The best moving checklist is the one you actually use
You don't have to complete every item here. A student leaving a furnished flat has a very different move from a family leaving a four-bedroom house.
Tick what applies, ignore what doesn't and add your own tasks as they come up.
If you're moving in or around Liverpool, the practical details we most often need are straightforward: where you're moving from and to, roughly how much is going, what access is like and whether there are unusually heavy, fragile or awkward items.
